Network Engineer Interview Questions and Answers

Q1: Define Network?

A network is a set of devices connected by physical media links. A network is recursively is a connection of two or more nodes by a physical link or two or more networks connected by one or more nodes.

Q2: What is Router?

A node that is connected to two or more networks is commonly called as router. It generally forwards message from one network to another.

Q3: What is difference between Switch and Hub?

Hub: A hub is a connection point for different segments of a LAN. It contains multiple ports and when it receives a packet of information at one port, it copies this packet to all segments of the LAN so that it can be viewed by all ports.

Switch: A switch is multi-port networking device that connects network devices together. A switch operates at the data link layer (layer 2) of the OSI model. A switch filters and then forwards data packets between networks.

Q4: List of Layers of OSI Model.

Physical Layer

Data Link Layer

Network Layer

Transport Layer

Session Layer

Presentation layer

Application Layer

Q5: Define Routing?

The process of determining systematically how to forward messages toward the destination nodes based on its address is call routing.

Q6: How many type of Routing?

There are two type of Routing:

1.       Static Routing

2.       Dynamic Routing

Q6: What is RIP (Routing Information Protocol)?

It is simple protocol used to exchange information between two routers. AD value is 120.

Q7:  How many Types of RIP routing?

There are two type of RIP routing:

RIPv1 > Classfull routing

RIPv2 >Classless routing

Q8: What is EIGRP routing?

Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) is an advanced distance-vector routing protocol that is used on a computer network for automating routing decisions and configuration. The protocol was designed by Cisco Systems as a proprietary protocol, available only on Cisco routers.

Q9: What is OSPF routing?

It is an Internet routing protocol that scales well, can route traffic along multiple paths, and uses knowledge of an internet topology to make accurate routing decision. AD value is 110.

Q10: What is Protocol?

A protocol is a set of rules that govern all aspects of information communication.

Q11: What is AS (Autonomous system)?

It is a collection router under the control of a single administrative authority and that uses a common Interior Gateway Protocol.

Q12: What is VPN?

VPN stand for Virtual Private Network. With the help of VPN, the remote users can securely connect to the organization’s network. Corporate companies, Educational Institution, Government offices etc use this VPN.

Q13: How many types of VPN?

There are two type of VPN?

1.       Remote VPN

2.       Site to site VPN

Q14: How many protocols in VPN?

There are many different types of VPN available:

1.       PPTP VPN

2.       Site to site VPN

3.       L2TP VPN

4.       IPsec VPN

5.       SSL

6.       MPLS VPN

7.       Hybrid VPN

Q15: How many types of modes are used in data transferring through networks?

There are three types of mode are used in data transferring through network:

1.       Simplex: Data transferring which takes place only in one direction is called Simplex. Like keyboard, mouse

2.       Half Duplex: Data transferring can happen in both directions but not at the same time. Alternatively, the data is sent and received. Like walky-talky

3.       Full Duplex: Data transferring happens in both directions that too simultaneously. Like Mobile
